NBA Hall of Famer and current TNT basketball commentator Charles Barkley stopped by the CNN studios on Friday (Jan. 24th) and said that he believes “thug” and “street cred” are racial slurs that are equivalent to the “N-word.” While discussing Richard Sherman’s much talked about post-game rant on CNN with host Brooke Baldwin, Barkley said he does not really use the word “thug” but said, “it is a racial slur.”
Earlier in the week, Sherman, in response to being called a “thug” for his post-game rant, made a similar comparison. “The only reason it bothers me is because it seems like it’s the accepted way of calling somebody the N-word nowadays,” Sherman said at a press conference. “There was a hockey game where they didn’t even play hockey, they just threw the puck aside and started fighting. I saw that, and said, ‘Oh man, I’m the thug? What’s going on here?’”
During his interview on CNN, Barkley had some choice words about the word thug and it’s use in the English language. “Every black person knows that. You got a couple of people are ignorant that use that as a slur. But people say it’s a street cred.” Barkley also says he openly uses the N-word, because he knows the difference. “I use the N-word. Me and my friends use it and we’re not going to stop using it. I don’t care what anybody out there say. I know the difference when me and my friend are saying the N-word, when somebody white is trying to insult me.”
